BCFAS -- Every lunchtime hundreds of young Chinese tech workers spill out of their offices onto streets in the Yue Hai district of Shenzhen, eager to grab tables before restaurants fill up.

The area – home to some of China’s biggest names in technology, including social media giant Tencent, telecoms maker ZTE and drone giant DJI – is often called China’s Silicon Valley.

Now, a joke that went viral online has put Yue Hai on the map amid the escalating US-China tech war.

“Rather than China, it seems the US government has started a tech war with Yue Hai. It is the district officer who should attend the negotiations with US President Donald Trump,” said the post, referring to the local government official in charge of administrative affairs in Yue Hai.

Streets and buildings in Yue Hai are tech-themed: Tencent’s original headquarters is located on Science and Research Road, while DJI is on High Tech Road, about half an hour’s walking distance away.

About a 30-minute drive from Yue Hai is the corporate headquarters of Huawei Technologies, the Chinese telecoms giant at the epicentre of the latest escalation in the tech war after Trump banned it from buying US technology without Washington’s approval.

DJI, which is building a new headquarters designed by the architectural firm behind Apple Park in Silicon Valley, provides nearly 80 per cent of the drones used in the US and Canada. Without naming DJI, the US Department of Homeland Security recently warned American companies about the security risks posed by Chinese-made drones.

One Yue Hai district company that has so far avoided the heat in the tech war is Tencent, operator of social media platform WeChat, whose CEO Pony Ma Huateng brought up the viral joke in remarks at a Shenzhen tech summit over the weekend. “It was widely circulated on the internet,” Ma noted.

In the span of four decades, Shenzhen, which became China’s first special economic zone after it was opened up to capitalism and foreign investment in 1979, has grown from a fishing village of 30,000 people to a sprawling manufacturing and innovation megacity of more than 13 million.

As well as big names like ZTE, DJI and Tencent, Yue Hai is home to dozens of China’s national hi-tech and research centres as well as nationally known tech companies such as Shenzhen Dazu Laser Technology and the Kingdee Software Group.

How Huawei became the world’s No 1 telecoms gear supplier

Now Shenzhen has been caught in the crossfire of a tech war because China’s most advanced technologies, from artificial intelligence to drones and robotics, are being developed in the area. “The [Yue Hai] hi-tech area has a very special position, playing a key role in Shenzhen’s pursuit of tech innovation,” Tencent’s Ma said over the weekend.

During lunch hour in Yue Hai earlier this week, the South China Morning Post spoke with young scientists, engineers and programmers to get their take on the tech war. Those who agreed to speak did so on the condition their names and companies would not be used as they were not authorised to speak to media.

“It will be a no-win situation for the US and China,” an engineer said. “Huawei and China’s high-tech manufacturing will be heavily hit if the tech war continues. I don’t think the US has prepared well for a break with China. The conflict has come about from China’s ambitions of having its own technologies and that makes the US feel threatened.”

A programmer said that while Huawei and some tech hardware makers were at the centre of the storm, everyone would feel the negative impact if it continued. “There are no lay-offs in my company so far, but marketing strategies have changed and sales of some products have been hit,” he said.

Beijing most innovative city in China, finds JLL study

To ease the impact on the local tech economy, which accounts for 40 per cent of the city’s GDP, the Shenzhen government said it would cut individual annual income tax from as high as 45 per cent to 15 per cent for certain top overseas and local talent as it seeks to maintain its edge in innovation. Deputy mayor Wang Lixin said on Sunday the city would use its own operating income to make up for the shortfall in tax revenue.

After a US tech ban on ZTE in 2017, which was lifted after it paid a US$1.4 billion fine and agreed to US compliance on Iran sanctions, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged China to go all-in on scientific self-reliance. Those calls have grown louder since Huawei met a similar fate in being denied access to US technology.

“I think the US government’s behaviour is barbarous,” a programmer said. “I don’t think what Trump is doing is farsighted. The trend of globalisation cannot be reversed.”

Others were more sanguine. “Complaining or being angry cannot solve any problem,” a scientist said. “What we can do is develop our own technology. If not, China’s tech development will be restrained by the US forever.”

Presiden Eisenhower mengusulkan program pembangunan jalan raya bernilai 50 miliar dolar, selama 10 tahun.

BCFAS -- In 1996, the last residential school in Canada was closed down, bringing to light horrifying stories about the methods used to sever indigenous children from the influence of their families and to assimilate them into the dominant "Canadian" culture. Over more than a century, tens of thousands of families were torn apart as children were kidnapped or forcibly removed from their homes

Residential schools were part of an extensive education system set up by the Canadian government and administered by churches with the objective of indoctrinating Aboriginal children into the Euro-Canadian and Christian way of life.
BCFAS -- But did Polynesians land on South American beaches, or did Native Americans sail 3500 kilometers into the Pacific to reach Rapa Nui? “Our studies strongly suggest that Native Americans most probably arrived [on Rapa Nui] shortly after the Polynesians,” says team member Erik Thorsby, an immunologist at the University of Oslo. He thinks that could support the controversial theory, posited by Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl more than a half-century ago, that Native Americans had the skills to move west across the Pacific.
But many scientists say that Pacific currents and Polynesian mastery of the waves make it more likely that the Polynesians were the voyagers. They may have sailed to South America, swapped goods for sweet potatoes and other novelties—and returned to their island with South American women.
BCFAS -- The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) was established on 1 June 2004 by Security Council resolution 1542. The UN mission succeeded a Multinational Interim Force (MIF) authorized by the Security Council in February 2004 after President Bertrand Aristide departed Haiti for exile in the aftermath of an armed conflict which spread to several cities across the country.
The devastating earthquake of 12 January 2010, which resulted in more than 220,000 deaths (according to Haitian Government figures), including 96 UN peacekeepers, delivered a severe blow to country's already shaky economy and infrastructure. The Security Council, by resolution 1908 of 19 January 2010, endorsed the Secretary-General's recommendation to increase the overall force levels of MINUSTAH to support the immediate recovery, reconstruction and stability efforts in the country.
BCFAS -- The University of Hawaii has sent an email to staff and students warning them what to do in the event of a nuclear attack by North Korea.

The email read: "In light of concerns about North Korea missile tests, state and federal agencies are providing information about nuclear threats and what to do in the unlikely event of a nuclear attack and radiation emergency."

The message was sent to 51,674 students and 10,606 faculty and staff in the university's system. Despite being in line with Hawaii state policy, the university was forced to apologise after sending the alarming email.

With less than 8,000 miles between them, the islands would theoretically be among the easiest US territories for North Korea to attack.

Experts believe a missile could reach Hawaiian shores in little more than 20 minutes and could easily kill as many as 15,000 people.

The University's director of communications Dan Meisenzahl, speaking to Hawaii News Now, said the email "could have been worded better".

He continued "I take full responsibility. The last thing I wanted to do was cause any unnecessary concern among our community."

The email went on to instruct students on how to shelter in place after a siren warning, typically used on the island to signal an incoming tsunami or hurricane.
BCFAS -- Petitioners representing Guam at the United Nations' 72nd General Assembly in New York strongly urged the U.N.'s Fourth Committee to hold the U.S. accountable for the delayed progress in Guam's path to self-determination.

Sixteen delegates from Guam and continental U.S. went before the committee, which has oversight on decolonization, and spoke of the injustices that resulted in Guam's status quo as an unincorporated U.S. territory.

"Our situation on Guam is urgent, as our land and ocean are increasingly under threat. Access and control of our resources is impeded by the delay in decolonization," Vice Speaker Therese Terlaje, D-Yona, said to committee chair Rafael Darío Ramírez Carreño.

The delegates said collectively that the U.S. has taken little to no action to assist. Recent events, including two federal lawsuits and movement towards a new Marine Corps Base on Guam, have once again put a strain on the island's right to self-determination.

LisaLinda Natividad, member-at-large for the Guam Commission on Decolonization, said the people of Guam have come to the U.N. for four generations to make the same request, yet that request hasn't been fulfilled.

With Guam's current political climate, Natividad said it is crucial for the U.N. to use its influences to force engagement from the U.S. for Guam's decolonization. In unity, the delegates asked the U.N. to intervene and to conduct a visiting mission to Guam.
BCFAS -- President-elect Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election and will be the next president of the United States. As I have written before in these pages, the rules of the game for choosing our presidents need to be changed, but that discussion concerns future elections, not this past one. A win is a win.

That most people acknowledge Trump’s victory should now free us to have a serious discussion about the role of foreign interference in the 2016 presidential election. During the campaign, mentions of foreign meddling quickly became partisan and polarized, blocking any real examination of the facts, let alone a discussion of prescriptions. Even Obama administration officials seemed to tiptoe around these issues, not wanting to appear to use their privileged access to classified information to help the Democratic Party’s candidate, Hillary Clinton. But now the election is over.

Before the next one, we need to know the facts — investigate what did and did not occur — so that we can develop procedures, policies and laws to strengthen the integrity of our electoral process before 2020. This is not a partisan plea; it is a national security issue.
BCFAS -- President-elect Donald Trump is still railing against the Clinton campaign’s decision to participate in Green Party nominee Jill Stein’s call for a recount in Wisconsin.

Late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, Trump used Hillary Clinton’s own words against her to suggest that his former campaign rival was hypocritical for implying that the election results might have been wrong.

“The Democrats, when they incorrectly thought they were going to win, asked that the election night tabulation be accepted. Not so anymore!

“Hillary Clinton conceded the election when she called me just prior to the victory speech and after the results were in. Nothing will change,” Trump wrote.
During the campaign, Trump complained repeatedly that the election was “rigged” against him, and refused to promise to accept the results if he lost during one of the general election debates.
BCFAS -- A pasindhèn (informally sindhèn; also called waranggana) is a female solo singer who sings with a gamelan. They may perform in unaccompanied music, dance, or wayang performances.

The pesindhèn may sing together with a gerong (male chorus), but their styles and words will be different. The part of the sindhen is largely improvised within strict parameters (similar to instrumental cengkok). The sindhen is also allowed a much freer rhythm, similar to the rebab and suling, instead of the strict rhythm of the gerong.

Sindhen can also refer to the choir of male and female singers used to accompany the bedhaya and serimpi court dances. In this usage, pesindhen refers to the individual members of the choir.
BCFAS -- A number of natives of the Amazon rainforest may partly descend from peoples in the Pacific, researchers say.

It remains a mystery as to when and how this genetic signature from an Australasia group in the Pacific they call "Population Y" made its way to the Amazon, scientists added.

Most genetic studies have suggested that all Native Americans analyzed to date can trace much or all of their ancestry to a single common origin — a population from Eurasia that probably migrated to the Americas more than 15,000 years ago, back when lower sea levels exposed the Bering land bridge known as Beringia that connected the continents. Some Native Americans from North America and the Arctic may also trace other parts of their ancestry to more recent waves of migration.

However, a number of prior studies of skull shapes hinted that two distinct groups entered the Americas. While one Asian type is similar to the vast majority of modern Native Americans, an earlier type seen in skeletons in Brazil and elsewhere resembled modern people from Australasia — a region that includes Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and neighboring Pacific Islands — and even some African groups. [In Photos: Human Skeleton Sheds Light on First Americans]

To shed light on this mystery, scientists analyzed the DNA of 30 Native American groups from Central and South America and from 197 non-American populations sampled worldwide.

The researchers found that some Native American groups from the Amazon rainforest — also known as Amazonia — derive a fraction of their ancestry from a population that is more closely related to the Onge from the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, New Guineans, Papuans and indigenous Australians than it is to present-day Eurasians or Native Americans.

"This finding was really surprising to us," said study lead author Pontus Skoglund, a population geneticist at Harvard Medical School in Boston. "Most genetic studies to date have basically found that all North and South Americans come from a single ancestral source population. That's not what we found — we found a more complicated scenario."

Present-day Native American populations from North and Central America seem to lack this genetic signature. The investigators propose that a group they call "Population Y" — named for Ypykuéra, which means "ancestor" in the Tupi language family spoken in Brazil — passed on this Australasian genetic signature to Amazonians. Population Y had already genetically intermingled with a lineage related to Native Americans by the time it reached Amazonia.

It remains uncertain when and how Population Y reached South America. "We cannot say much about the story of how this genetic link came about," Skoglund told Live Science. "This finding just raises more questions we need to answer about American history."

Still, the researchers do not believe this genetic signature came by boat in the last few thousand years. "We think intermingling happened earlier, potentially among the earliest colonizers of the Americas," Skoglund said. "They probably came over Beringia."

This finding is one of several recent genetic surprises suggesting links between Amazonia and the Pacific. In 2013, scientists in Brazil unexpectedly found Polynesian DNA in the bones of the Botocudo, now-extinct Native American hunter-gatherers who once lived in Brazil's interior. However, Skoglund noted the genetic signature in the Amazonians his team analyzed differed from what was seen in the Botocudo.

The researchers suggest analyzing DNA from ancient remains from across the Americas to help solve these mysteries. They detailed their findings online today (July 21) in the journal Nature.
BCFAS -- Indigenous people that lived in southeastern Brazil in the late 1800s shared some genetic sequences with Polynesians, an analysis of their remains shows. The finding offers some support for the possibility that Pacific islanders traded with South America thousands of years ago, but researchers say that the distinctive DNA sequences, or haplogroups, may have entered the genomes of the native Brazilians through the slave trade during the nineteenth century.

Most scientists agree that humans arrived in the Americas between 15,000 and 20,000 years ago, probably via the Bering land bridge linking northeastern Asia with what is now Alaska. But the precise timing and the number of ‘migration waves’ is unclear, owing largely to variations in early Americans’ physical features, says Sérgio Pena, a molecular geneticist at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
BCFAS -- Alongside the hunting and massacres of the Selk'nam, the Europeans were responsible for the transport of tuberculosis and smallpox.

By 1887, it is estimated that only 2000 of the original 4000 remained.

In 1889, the pitiful businessman Maurice Maitre, with the permission of the Chilean government, took eleven Selk'nam to Paris by force to exhibit them in the human zoos of the World's Fair. Of the 11 people he captured, 2 died on the way there. They were put in cages and given horse meat to eat. A missionary society protested their condition and he ended up canceling the tour to England, and instead took them to Belgium. Two more died on the way there. In Belgium, they were jailed for being immigrants by the police. When they finally returned to Tierra del Fuego, only six remained.

Because of their persecution, the Selk'nam that remained had all migrated to the southern coast and were deported by the Chilean government to Dawson Island. Some Salesian missionaries settled there with the purpose of converting and civilizing the remaining natives.

Despite the efforts of the missionaries, only 279 remained in 1919.

The number kept going down. In 1945, there were 25 left. And in 1974, with the death of Angela Loij, the last full-blooded Selk'nam was gone.

Nb: The Selk'nam, also known as the Onawo or Ona people, were an indigenous people in the Patagonian region of southern Argentina and Chile
BCFAS -- Introduction

Numerous evidence suggests that Muslims from Spain and West Africa arrived in the Americas at least five centuries before Co1umbus. It is recorded, for example that in the mid-tenth century during the rule of the Umayed Caliph Abdul-Rahman III (929-961), Muslims of African origin sailed westward from the Spanish port of Delba (Palos) into the “Ocean of darkness an fog.” They returned after a long absence with much booty from a “strange and curious land.” It is evident that people of Muslim origin are known to have accompanied Columbus and subsequent Spanish explorers to the New World.

The last Muslim stronghold in Spain, Granada, fell to the Christians in 1492 CE, just before the Spanish inquisition was launched. To escape persecution, many non-Christians fled or embraced Catholicism. At least two documents imply the presence of Muslims in Spanish America before 1550 CE. Despite the fact that a decree issued in 1539 CE, by Charles V, King of Spain, forbade the grandsons of Muslims who had been burned at the stake to migrate to the West Indies. This decree was ratified in 1543 CE, and an order for the expulsion of all Muslims from overseas Spanish territories was subsequently published. Many references on the Muslim arrival in the Americas are available. They are summarized in the following notes:

Historic Documents

l. A Muslim historian and geographer Abul-Hassan Ali Ibn Al-Hussain Al-Masudi (871 - 957 CE) wrote in his book ‘Muruj Adh-dhahab wa Maadin al-Jawhar’ (The Meadows of Gold and Quarries of Jewels) that during the rule of the Muslim Caliph of Spain Abdullah Ibn Muhammad (888 - 912 CE), a Muslim navigator Khashkhash Ibn Saeed Ibn Aswad of Cordoba, Spain sailed from Delba (Palos) in 889 CE, crossed the Atlantic, reached an unknown territory (Ard Majhoola) and returned with fabulous treasures. In Al-Masudi's map of the world there is a large area in the ocean of darkness and fog (the Atlantic ocean) which he referred to as the unknown territory (the Americas).

2. A Muslim historian Abu Bakr Ibn Umar Al-Gutiyya narrated that during the reign of the Muslim Caliph of Spain, Hisham II (976 -1009 CE), another Muslim navigator Ibn Farrukh of Granada sailed from Kadesh (February 999 CE) into the Atlantic, landed in Gando (Great Canary Islands) visiting King Guanariga, and continued westward where he saw and named two islands, Capraria and Pluitana. He arrived back in Spain in May 999 CE.

3. Columbus sailed from Palos (Delba), Spain. He was bound for Gomera (Canary Islands) - Gomera is an Arabic word meaning ‘small firebrand’ - there he fell in love with Beatriz Bobadilla, daughter of the first captain General of the island (the family name Bobadilla is derived from the Arab Islamic name Abouabdilla). Nevertheless, the Bobadilla clan was not easy to ignore. Another Bobadilla (Francisco), later as the royal commissioner, put Columbus in chains and transferred him from Santo Domingo back to Spain (November 1500 CE). The Bobadilla family was related to Abbadid dynasty of Seville (1031 -1091 CE).

On October 12, 1492 CE, Columbus landed on a little island in the Bahamas that was called Guanahani by the natives. Renamed San Salvador by Columbus, Guanahani is derived from Mandinka and modified Arabic words. Guana (Ikhwana) means ‘brothers’ and Hani is an Arabic name. Therefore the original name of the island was ‘Hani Brothers.’ [Click here for corrupted names of Arabic origin, such as those starting with Guad-, al-, Medina and others.]

Ferdinand Columbus, the son of Christopher, wrote about the blacks seen by his father in Honduras: “The people who live farther east of Pointe Cavinas, as far as Cape Gracios a Dios, are almost black in color.” At the same time in this very same region, lived a tribe of Muslim natives known as Almamy. In Mandinka and Arabic languages Almamy was the designation of “Al-Imam” or “Al-Imamu,” the person who leads the Prayer, or in some cases, the chief of the community, and/or a member of the Imami Muslim community.

4. A renowned American historian and linguist Leo Weiner of Harvard University, in his book Africa and The Discovery of America (1920) wrote that Columbus was well aware of the Mandinka presence in the New World and that the West African Muslims had spread throughout the Caribbean, Central, South and North American territories, including Canada, where they were trading and intermarrying with the Iroquois and Algonquin Indians....
